All About Our Soaps

How did we venture into soap making?

We first decided to try our hand at soap making in 2013. After testing several store bought bars and finding that they only irritated and worsened the condition of our skin, we knew there had to be a better solution. Today, Woodchuck Creek Farms is proud to offer its line of handcrafted soap made using traditional methods, tried and true recipes, and the best possible ingredients. Quality is truly our goal and we believe once you try our real soap, you’ll never look back!

What is cold process soap and how is it different?

Cold process soap is made using a chemical reaction that converts fats and oils into soap using sodium hydroxide (commonly known as lye) through a process called saponification. Once complete, no sodium hydroxide remains in the final product. Most commercially available bars of soap are actually made with harsh detergents that have been chemically altered to resemble soap, while cold process soap is much more gentle on the skin as it preserves the natural moisturizing properties of fats and oils.

A Look at Our Ingredients

What’s pine tar and what’s so great about it?

Pine tar is a dark tacky substance that is made when pine wood is subjected to very high temperatures but isn’t allowed to burn. A long-time staple on the farm, pine tar is used to treat sore hooves due to its natural antiseptic, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties. We’ve paired pine tar with tea tree oil to maximize those healthy skin benefits in a soap. Hands (or should we say hooves?) down, our Pine Tar Bar is the best formulation available.

Olive oil, coconut oil, and shea butter, oh my!

Each of these plant-based skin conditioners has its own unique properties that helps to restore the natural balance of oils in your skin so it feels soft, never stripped. Olive oil and coconut oil work together in harmony, balancing their moisturizing and cleansing properties, while shea butter is protective and healing as it is rich in antioxidants. We’ve carefully crafted our recipes to ensure the right balance of each to create the perfect soap.

Lard! Ew, gross…right?

Well, we don’t think so and here’s why… Animal fats have been used in soap for centuries as they produce a creamy lather and solid, long-lasting bars. They are also moisturizing and highly compatible with human skin because (spoiler alert) we too, are animals. Not to worry, once the bar of soap has set there is no risk of spoilage nor is there any associated scent—our sincerest apologies if you were looking for a bacon-flavored bar. If you prefer to use a soap made without animal byproduct, our Shea Butter Bar is 100% vegan.

Lavender dreams await you!

Nothing relaxes us quite like the scent of lavender. After a hard day’s work, we’ve got you covered with our Lavender Bar. Pure lavender essential oil offers aromatherapy and help relieve stress! As a bonus, it also promotes skin healing and has antifungal properties.
